The Day After Is The Day Of

It is the Monday after the City Gates Conference and this is a picture of my desk this morning. It is the work that awaits me…

The Big Days: conferences, retreats, summits, weddings, baptisms, graduations… they all are packed with aspirations, emotions, weighty thoughts and hopes for a new day, a new lease on life, a new set of eyes with which to see the world.

But, it’s the Day After any of these things that matters most. It is in the Day After that ideals and ideas meet the test of Everyday. It is the Day After that promises only real life and asks with a gravelly voice, “So, what are you going to do with me?” Our answer to that challenge is what could change the world. Can we bring the purpose and passion of the Big Day to the everyday?

I believe that the answer is yes, but we must beat back the defeat of cynicism with one hand, and the false expectations of idealism with the other. Our work will be challenging, difficult, boring and frustrating, inspiring, promising, exhilarating, and fruitful. But regardless of the high of the Big Days and the sigh of the Everyday, God’s call invites us to use every moment to join Him in His work.

On this Day After I want to remind you that this is the Day Of. The day of seeing the Kingdom through the Everyday and working toward it no matter what. I want to share this video with you again just to remind you that Today, the Kingdom of God is at Work.
