Can We Be Too Humble?
False humility and a lack of humility are easy to spot. But is it possible for followers of Jesus to be too humble? Is there such a thing as too much humility?
The hymn in Philippians 2:6-11 tells us about Jesus’ humbling of himself. God emptied himself to become a human and a slave. He was obedient even to the point of death on a shameful cross. An infinite God who never needed to taste death laid down his life freely to redeem humanity. No earthly person is capable of such astonishing degree of self-reduction and sacrifice.
Because Jesus was humble to a degree that we could never be, there is no measure of humility that is too great for us. Not that we might eventually get the recognition we think we deserve. And not so the people we honor would one day return the favor. We are to live in humility so that by our lives and actions the name of Jesus might be made great.
